There's a lot of positive energy in our valley know as "Bear Valley." Founded in the mid 1800's, Big Bear was first known for it abundance in gold. Primary taken from Holcomb Valley. Not a lot of people know this, but the discovery of Bear Valley was the result of one of Southern California's few "cowboy and Indian" skirmishes. In 1845 Benjamin Wilson led a group of men on a pursuit of local Indians who stole horses from ranches in the Riverside area. They drove them to the high desert near Victorville, through Big Bear. Wilson was the grandfather of the famous General George S. Patton. Upon coming to an endless meadow filled with great grizzly bears Wilson coind the name "Bear Valley." Years later the dam know for holding the water for Big Bear Lake was built. At one point in time the dam was known as a wonder of the world for it's fabulous construction. The original dam is still there, in the water opposed by the new, higher dam.
