Sky Tour Radio Welcomes: Darrell Mason
Sunday, October 21st, 2018
This week on SkyTour Radio, we are joined by special guest, fellow astronomer, and friend of the show, Darrell Mason. We will discuss how his journey led him to astronomy, how his artistic gifts and love of learning lead him to build his own telescopes, photograph stunning events and teach others to love the sky as much as he did. We take a look at what makes an astronomer and ponder some of the universe’s greatest mysteries, while hearing accounts of some of the incredible events Darrell himself has witnessed in space history. The youngest of 7 children and an identical twin, Darrell was born and raised in the Missouri Ozarks, and moved to Colorado when he turned 21. He lived for 8 years in the high country, and has lived in Colorado Springs for 34 years.Darrell was an art major in college before joining the work force, where he was an industrial mechanic of one sort or another all his working life. Darrell has worked in water treatment, mining and the printing industry, but the design and fabrication aspects of the jobs were always his favorite part as it scratched the itch for his creative impulse. This led Darrell to do fabrication work for himself, such as metal sculpture and building telescopes.
Darrell has had a lifelong interest in science and astronomy, starting as a child when he discovered kids’ books on science at the library, and a book on Greek mythology, which later dovetailed into the constellation stories he saw in the sky.
Darrell got his first telescope when he lived in Leadville, Colorado, the highest city in the US, at over 10,200 feet elevation. He was spoiled by the dark skies there, and is where he really learned the sky and its wonders.
Darrell gave astronomy programs and hosted star parties on his own, for the state parks system and others, and with the local astronomy club. He also invites neighbors and passersby to come take a look when he sets up in the yard.

From Black Holes to Extraterrestrial Life, we will explore the Universe like never before. Join us to check out such things as how stars form, how they live and, how our fate is intertwined with theirs.
