SkyTour Radio Presents: Bonded In Permanent Embrace: Pluto And Charon
Sunday, July 15th 2018
Tonight on SkyTour Radio we visit the dark worlds of Pluto and Charon at the place in our Solar System where ice is king. Pluto was found in 1930 and Charon almost 5 decades later. As it turns out Pluto plays hosts to 4 additional moons besides Charon, with the entire system owing its existence to a likely chance collision between a previously larger Charon and Pluto.Pluto is the large black blob in this image and the bulge seen above it (left) and below it (right) is Charon in this discovery image of Pluto’s largest Moon
Pluto is a world of oddities. Made mostly of water this dwarf planet (It lost its planet status in 2006!) has a surface of frozen nitrogen and water ice and of all things has a tenuous ATMOSPHERE that is frigid beyond cold! Orbiting our Sun at a distant 39 Astronomical Units (1 AU = 93,000,000 miles) Pluto is locked in a forever embrace with its largest moon Charon, with both circling each other with the same side facing the other.
The surface of this distant dwarf planet is riddled with mystery as well. There are areas of Pluto pockmarked with craters. Other areas are completely free of them. This suggests something is altering the landscape of Pluto from below. Craters are removed by a resurfacing process on Pluto. This process is unknown and unexpected. For such a distant small world, Pluto was expected to be “dead” with no activity. Nothing could be further from the truth! In fact Charon’s north pole is covered inTholins (radiation bathed organic compound) that were showered onto it by Pluto itself!
So join us Sunday at 9PM ET for fun and mystery of the Plutonian System!
SkyTour Radio explores the Universe in a down to Earth manner explaining the science we know in fun and bite-sized terms. Science is for everyone and people shouldn’t require an advanced degree to understand as long as it is delivered in an easy to follow way. From Black Holes to Extraterrestrial Life, we will explore the Universe like never before. Join us to check out such things as how stars form, how they live and, how our fate is intertwined with theirs. On the extraterrestrial life front, we will be speaking to the UFO and science arena’s top researchers and bring UFOlogy into the 21st century.
